Tiered Patio with Spa and Fire Pit

This homeowner wanted a patio to connect to their existing deck. Some of the features they were looking to add included a spa, a built-in-bench, and a fire pit. To create a smooth transition from the rigid deck to the more organic patio space, we placed irregular stone steppers in mulch and natural slab steps leading down the hill to the patio. The retaining wall against the deck served as a nook for the built-in-bench, and also retained the spa area. Transitioning down the fire pit, we placed more natural stone slab steps to create a sense of entry into the rustic area for circling around the fire. The end result is a tiered patio that serves many functions.

Featured Project - Patio Addition

To turn an existing patio into an entertainment haven, we increased the square footage of this homeowner’s patio and added a built-in-grill, fridge, counter, fireplace, and covered pavilion. The additional materials for the project were carefully selected to match the materials that were already in place. Wet laid, natural cleft flagstone was used for the patio floor and off-white stucco was used for the seat walls. Tying it all together is a mosaic tile in the center of the fireplace that can be seen from within the homeowner’s kitchen. This family now has a roofed structure to shield them from rain and a beautiful space in which they can freely move around and entertain their guests.

Featured Project - New Patio for a New Home

After getting settled into their newly constructed home in Chadds Ford, PA, Brian and Denise were ready to move their efforts outdoors and begin creating a relaxing oasis in their backyard. As with many new construction properties, their site was a clean slate lacking both hardscaping and softscaping. Therefore, our challenge was to create a sense of space and intimacy within a wide open backyard. To accomplish this we built a two tiered patio with seat walls, thus allowing for two separate entertaining areas: one for grilling and eating, the other for relaxing by the fire. The installation of large trees for privacy screening along with the strategic placement of a stone veneer fireplace helped to soften the landscape while creating a more intimate feeling within the backyard.

“We are loving the patio. You did a fantastic job designing it and incorporating all of the landscaping. Every morning when we wake up we can’t wait to go out and sit on the patio.”
– Homeowners Brian and Denise.

Featured Project - Sloped Back Yard Transformed into Pool Paradise

Over the past three years, Burkholder Brothers has enjoyed completing many projects for the Lautenbach Residence in West Chester, PA. JoAnne Lautenbach first contacted us in 2007 to re-design the front landscape and walkway at her home. We designed and completed the project and started design work for a swimming pool and decking on the slope in her back yard. Please enjoy our Before and After pictures.

Before

Utilizing retaining walls for terracing, our team designed and installed: a swimming pool complete with colorful plantings, paver patio to replace the wooden deck, landscape lighting and wet laid stone walkway leading from driveway.

After

"Absolutely a great experience from conceptual design to final clean-up. Burkholder Brothers delivered unparalleled results. I couldn’t be happier with the quality and beauty on my own little oasis" JoAnne

Featured Project - Ford Patio & Softscape

The Ford project was a combination of many of the Burkholder specialties!

The Fords home sits on a great lot with a spectacular view from a large porch.  The finished basement walked out to a small patio that was sinking and holding water.  There was also a runoff problem that would leave mud on the patio after heavy rains.  During our consultation we discussed the Ford families vision of a large patio that could be accessed by friends entering the house from the front walkway and from the walk-out basement door.  The Fords expressed interest in a fire pit to create a destination for their high school aged children and their friends to gather.

landscaping_ford-3landscaping_ford-2landscaping_ford-1 Our design team got started on a plan that addressed every detail and challenge.  We met with the Fords and visited a few of our past projects to look at ideas and available materials.

After our design team finished and all materials were secured our production team got to work!

The Fords decided on thermal cut, irregular west mountain flagstone for the 600 SF patio, west mountain fieldstone was used for the seating walls and firepit to compliment the patio stones. 30 tons of matching boulders and slap steppers were placed to provide access form the main front walkway while creating an intimate seating area featuring a boulder bench.

The final product is a stunning combination of plants and stones that is a great family hangout!

A quote from Rob Ford:

Awesome job....thanks!!!  My son had some friends over Sunday night for the first official fire...I heard comments about the landscaping...."dude this just looks like something from MTV cribs" "wow this is just the coolest patio ever" I didn't do it for the comments, but it was funny hearing the conversations from teenagers(16-19 yr olds). it does look amazing..it completely transformed our house...feel free to show it off, we are very impressed.

Thanks - Rob
