Is your lawn not looking so good? This hot and dry summer has wreaked havoc on many lawns in our area. We have seen it all: weeds, fungus, disease, and browning lawns due to lack of water. Fall is the best time to renovate your lawn. One of the most important lawn care practices is aerating your lawn. Core aeration and over-seeding will benefit even a healthy looking lawn. Aeration helps the lawn’s vigor, and reduces maintenance requirements. The following are other benefits of core aeration.
- Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere.
- Enhanced soil water uptake.
- Improved fertilizer uptake and use.
- Reduced water runoff and puddling.
- Improved turf grass rooting.
- Reduced soil compaction.
- Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance.
- Improved resiliency and cushioning.
- Enhanced thatch breakdown.
Annual aeration is beneficial for all lawns, especially when it is done properly and at the proper time of the year. The type of aeration equipment used influences the benefits obtained from aeration. Equipment with hollow tines removes soil cores. Aeration equipment varies in tine size up to 3/4 inch and in depth of penetration up to 3 inches. The closer the tine placement removes more soil, exposes more soil surface area for water and fertilizer uptake, and it alleviates compaction quicker than the wider tine spacing. It is recommended to no more than 6 inch spacing.
